BREAKING: U.S. Court Orders Deportation of Former Ghanaian Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta
In a stunning legal and diplomatic development, a U.S. Federal Court Judge has ordered the deportation of Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s former Finance Minister, marking a dramatic fall from grace for one of the West African nation’s most powerful figures. Ofori-Atta, who served for nearly seven years and was a central architect of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s economic policy, had been declared a fugitive by Ghanaian authorities following a series of corruption and misconduct allegations related to the country’s severe debt crisis and controversial international loan agreements. The U.S. court’s decision signifies a swift rejection of any asylum or protective claims, effectively green-lighting his immediate repatriation to face the charges awaiting him at home.
This ruling sends a powerful message about accountability and the long arm of justice, transcending borders. For many Ghanaians, Ofori-Atta became the focal point of public fury over economic hardship, characterized by soaring inflation, a depreciating cedi, and difficult IMF negotiations. His deportation from the United States, a country often seen as a potential safe haven for fleeing elites, establishes a significant precedent. It underscores a growing international willingness—particularly under U.S. anti-corruption initiatives—to cooperate in bringing foreign officials to book, denying them sanctuary and forcing them to answer for their tenure in their own nation’s courts.
The political shockwaves in Ghana will be immediate and profound. For the ruling government, this is a deeply embarrassing and destabilizing event, directly implicating its former economic steward. For the opposition and countless citizens who protested under the hashtag #FixTheCountry, the deportation is a hard-won victory for public pressure. As Ofori-Atta is returned to Accra, all eyes will turn to the integrity and transparency of the judicial proceedings that follow. This moment is more than just the fate of one man; it is a critical test of Ghana’s commitment to dismantling a culture of impunity and delivering tangible justice in a time of profound economic struggle.

Armed Robber Expresses Remorse After Asankrangwa Heist
In a dramatic turn of events following a daring daylight robbery in the Amenfi West Municipality, one of five suspected armed robbers has publicly apologized and vowed to turn over a new leaf. The suspect, who was paraded before the press, expressed deep regret for his actions following his arrest in connection with an incident at Malta, a suburb of Asankrangwa. “I am sorry. I won’t steal again,” he stated, offering a plea for forgiveness as he was identified by police as a member of the gang that allegedly terrorized workers at a Chinese heavy-duty machinery company.
According to police reports, the gang is accused of a violent and well-coordinated operation in which they held employees of the Chinese firm hostage. During the ordeal, the suspects made away with a staggering sum of Gh¢200,000.00. The crime has sent shockwaves through the local business community, highlighting the brazen nature of the attack, which combined the serious offenses of unlawful restraint and high-value robbery. The use of hostages and the substantial amount stolen point to a professionally executed, high-risk criminal enterprise.
Despite the suspect’s expressed remorse, legal experts note that the apology is unlikely to shield him from the full weight of the law. He and his four accomplices are expected to face a litany of charges, including conspiracy to commit robbery, unlawful imprisonment, and armed robbery. While a show of regret can sometimes be considered a mitigating factor in court, the severity of the crimes—particularly the hostage-taking and the large sum of money involved—means the gang still faces a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.
